Khushbu Sundar Joins BJP, After Resigning From Congress

On Monday in Delhi, actor-turned-politician Khushbu Sundar, who resigned from Congress, joined the BJP. She told reporters after joining the BJP, "If the nation has to move forward, then we need someone like PM Narendra Modi to take the country in the right direction." The BJP's expectation is not what the party will do for me, but what the party will do for the people of the country. When you've 128 cr people really believing in one man and that's our PM, I think they're doing something completely right,”she added.

In her letter of resignation to Sonia Gandhi, Khushbu wrote that few elements seated at higher levels within the party are "suppressing” people like her who want to work for the party. "People who have no link with ground realities or public acceptance are dictating terms, "she wrote. The group, meanwhile, declared that Sundar was suspended from her post of All India Congress Committee spokesperson with "immediate effect."

The changes come ahead of the elections to the Tamil Nadu Assembly scheduled to be held next year. Kushbhu was upset, according to local reports, that she was not given a ticket in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and she was promised a seat in the 2021 assembly elections by the BJP. Kushbhu 's departure will not leave a vacuum in the party, Tamil Nadu Congress leader KS Alagiri said. "Her (Kushbhu) actions have been against the party's values and philosophy for the past six months. She has been making contradicting remarks against our leader Rahul Gandhi ji. She was seen by people in Congress only as an actress and not as a politician," he said.

In July, Khushbu Sundar first sparked reports of a split with Congress when she supported the latest National Education Policy of the Centre. She had also tweeted an apology to party leader Rahul Gandhi for her differing views. Her tweet invited criticism from senior Congress leaders. Kushbhu's comments reflect her immaturity, Tamil Nadu Congress President KS Alagiri said. Unlike the BJP, Congress MP Jothimani said the Congress Party and its leadership never expect individuals to be head-nodding robots or puppets. Khushbu joined the Congress in 2014, having earlier been a member of the DMK from 2010. In 2014, Khushbu joined Congress, having previously been a member of the DMK since 2010.

Kushbu took the political plunge in May 2010 when she joined DMK in the presence of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.Karunanidhi. Kushbhu said DMK philosophies are close to her personal values and they have always worked for empowering women. Kushbhu was an individual with progressive thoughts, with affinity endorsed by the rationalist social reformer and Dravidar Kazhagam leader EV Ramasamy Naicker, widely known as Periyar, the then DMK president Karunanidhi had said. Incidentally, in the 2007 biopic titled Periyar, Kushbu acted as Maniammai (the wife of Periyar).

Four years later in June 2014, Kushbu left DMK after being sidelined. In a letter to then party chief Karunanidhi, she said her commitment and hard work for the party continued to be a one-way road. "I take the decision with a heavy heart to leave the party as a member," she wrote. Khushbu entered Congress in November that year after meeting Congress Leader Sonia Gandhi at her home. Kushbu said it's a moment of pride, and the only party that can keep India together is Congress. "I feel like I'm at home," she said. Kushbu added that she would work for the good of the country and it is not focused on Tamil Nadu alone. Kushbu, a multi-faceted celebrity, has acted in more than 200 South Indian language films. She has produced and starred in a few soap operas on television. Currently, alongside her husband Sundar C, Kushbu heads Avni Cinemax, a production house.
