Former Central Government Secretary, EAS Sarma, is urging the Department of Atomic Energy and Mines Ministry to stop private companies, like the Adani Group, from mining beach sand in Andhra Pradesh.

In letters to DAE Secretary Ajit Kumar Mohanty and Mines Department Secretary VL Kantha Rao, Sarma expressed concern that the central and state governments might be favoring the Adani Group. He threatened to seek an inquiry if no action is taken.

Sarma pointed out that the Andhra Pradesh government is inviting bids for beach sand mining in Gara and Bheemunipatnam, and the only requirement for bidders is prior mining experience.

He also mentioned a recent amendment to the Mines and Minerals (Development & Regulation) Act, allowing private companies to mine beach sands. The Adani Group had formed subsidiaries for beach sand mining in Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, which raised concerns about a coordinated effort between the company and the Ministry of Mines.

Sarma had previously written to the Cabinet Secretary about multiple favors granted to the Adani Group by central ministries.
