Bollywood actress Alia Bhatt’s latest bridal ad has sparked a debate on the social media. Though with many calling it ‘hypocritical’, whereas others hailing it for women empowerment. Her latest ad for Indian wedding attire company Manyavar has become the talk of town. In the advertisement for bridal wear, Alia Bhatt questions the tradition of kanyadaan. While sitting at the mandap with her husband-to-be, she mentions each family members- grandmother, father and mother, and how much they love her. However, she objects against the practice of kanyadaan at the time of weddings. Kalank fame Alia Bhatt asks everyone, “Am I a thing to be donated? Why only kanyadaan.” She is surprised when her mother-in-law and father-in-law give their son away as well. Later the couple gets married.
The ad suggests that instead of kanyadaan, one should practice kanyamaan referring to respecting women. After the advertisement was released, Twitter was abuzz with opinions.
One of the netizen named Payal said: why doesn’t Manyavar makes an ad on muslim marriage rituals & tripple talak stuff. is that just & not kanyadaan.. They earn from hindu rituals & festivals & they want to demean on the other hand. Another netizen said: Kanyadanam, means – giving away the bride. In Sanskrit, it is a symbolic marriage ritual for the Bride’ parents and the wedding couple. The bride’s father takes his daughter’s right hand and places it in Groom’s right hand, request for him to accept his daughter as his equal partner.
Another user said: Kanyaadaan is the highest form of daan. It is not a donation of a woman to a man. If you don’t understand, do not ridicule our religious practices. Thanks for showing your two face. We are now cancelling our shopping at Manyavar for the upcoming wedding ceremony in our family.
