Udhampur Chopper Crash: Both Pilots Succumb To Injuries, Northern Command Pays Tribute

Two pilots of the Army Aviation Corps died on Tuesday after their Cheetah helicopter crash-landed in Shiv Garh Dhar area near Patnitop tourist resort in Udhampur district while on a training sortie.

Defence spokesperson Lt Col Devender Anand said, “Both the pilots were critically injured during helicopter crash landing. They were evacuated to the nearest medical facility but later succumbed to their injuries.”

The pilots were identified as Major Rohit Kumar of Ace City, Noida West, Uttar Pradesh, and Major Anuj Rajput of Panchkula, Haryana.

Some villagers were the first responders to the incident who helped evacuate the pilots from the mangled aircraft.

Northern Army commander Lt Gen YK Joshi said all ranks salute bravehearts Major Rohit Kumar and Major Anuj Rajput who made the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty and offer deepest condolences to their families.

“I salute the courage and supreme sacrifice of our braveheart army officers Major Rohit Kumar & Major Anuj Rajput who laid down their lives in the line of duty at Patnitop, Udhampur. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families in this hour of grief,” lieutenant governor Manoj Sinha tweeted.

Union minister Dr Jitendra Singh also expressed grief over the death of the two pilots. “Saddened to receive the news of death of both the pilots who were injured this morning in the army helicopter crash in #Patnitop region of #JammuAndKashmir. Despite prompt and best possible aid, they could not be saved. My deep condolences to the bereaved families,” he posted from his Twitter handle.
