Thiruvananthapuram Airport Suspends Flight Operations For 8Hours Due To Cyclone Burevi.

On Friday, the authorities in Thiruvananthapuram suspended flight operations at the international airport for eight hours between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. to ensure safety ahead of the landfall of Cyclone Burevi across the southern districts of Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Burevi could make its landfall in Kerala on Friday, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said, and has issued a red alert for heavy to very heavy rains of over 20 cm in 24 hours and a cyclone warning for the coasts of south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala. "Due to Cyclone Burevi taking aircraft & passenger protection into account, the Trivandrum airfield is closed from 1000-1800 hrs IST on 4.12.20. For revised timings, passengers booked for tomorrow's flights are requested to contact the airlines concerned," Trivandrum airport tweeted. It also posted an updated flight schedule and said that for the latest changes, air travellers can contact the airlines they are flying with. 

In its latest bulletin, the weather bureau said that Cyclone Burevi has weakened into a deep depression and will cross the coast of Tamil Nadu on Friday. The weather bureau had earlier predicted that Cyclone Burevi, which crossed the Sri Lankan coast on Wednesday night, would reach the Tamil Nadu coast as a cyclonic storm. A red alert was also released for South Tamil Nadu and South Kerala. The Deep Depression over the Gulf of Mannar lay about 40 km southwest of Ramanathapuram centred at 2330 IST on 3 Dec. With a wind speed of 50-60 kmph to cross Ramanathapuram and neighbouring Thoothukudi districts within a few hours. IMD said in the bulletin to further weaken into a Depression by 4 Dec morning. A public holiday for the Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha and Idukki districts in the state was declared by the Kerala government on Friday. There is a holiday in Tamil Nadu in the six districts of Virudhanagar, Ramanathapuram, Thirunelveli, Thuthukudi, Thenkasi and Kanyakumari because of Cyclone Burevi's landfall. Madurai Airport flight services were also suspended until 12 p.m. and officials said Tuticorin Airport would be closed on Friday.
