Lijo Jose Pellissery's Malayalam film 'Jallikattu' was chosen as India's official entry to the 2021 Oscars. Starring Antony Varghese, Chemban Vinod Jose, Sabumon Abdusamad,' Jallikettu' is based on a short storey written by Hareesh S, titled 'Maoist,' who also adapted the script along with R. Jayakumar.-Jayakumar. The film that was released in 2019 to rave critical acclaim and box office success will now be in the running to win a 'Best International Feature Film' nomination. According to news, the film beat out 'Gulabo Sitabo' starring Amitabh Bachchan-Ayushmann Khurranan,' Anushka Sharma's 'Bulbul' production, 'The Sky is Pink' starring Priyanka Chopra, 'Serious Men' starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and even 'Gunjan Saxena' starring Janhvi Kapoor.

Out of 27 films including The Disciple',' Shakuntala Devi',' Shikara',' Chhapaak',' AK vs AK',' Bhonsle',' Chhalaang' and 'Eeb Allay Ooo!, the film was selected. " Test Post ',' Atkan Chatkan ',' Kaamyaab ',' Birthday of Chintu Ka 'and' Bittersweet '. Last year the commercially successful 'Gully Boy' by Zoya Akhtar was sent to the 92nd Academy Awards as India's official entry. The film, however, did not make the cut among the 91 films that were in the contest. In the Foreign Feature Film category, the South Korean blockbuster 'Parasite' came out victorious and produced history by becoming the first non-English film to win Best Picture as well.

After a move from 'Foreign-Language Film' in April 2019, this is the second year the award will be given under the name of 'Best International Feature Film'. Films in this category are created with a primarily non-English dialogue track outside the US and can include animated and documentary characteristics. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) welcomed Bollywood stars Alia Bhatt, Hrithik Roshan, and costume designer Neeta Lulla to join the 819 artists and executives on their panel in a bid for a more 'inclusive' awards show. Casting director Nandini Shrikent, documentary filmmakers Nishtha Jain and Amit Madheshiya and visual effects supervisors Vishal Anand and Sandeep Kamal were other prominent Indian names to receive invitations.

As members, these artists will be eligible to vote for the forthcoming Academy Awards in various categories. On April 25, 2021, the 93rd Academy Awards are scheduled to take place. Among the many things delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic was the award ceremony. Originally, the display was expected to take place on February 28, until both the ceremony and the eligibility period were delayed for two months, citing film release delays and the closure of theatres due to the pandemic. It should have been released in their respective countries between the extended dates of October 1, 2019, and December 31, 2020 for the film to be included in the Oscar race, compared to the previous October-September time frame.

On February 9, 2021, the shortlist of 10 will be released. Films that had a previously scheduled theatrical release but were/were initially made available via a commercial SVoD service may now apply for consideration of another addition to the eligibility rules. This came as a welcome improvement, given that a theatrical release was made obligatory by standard rules.
