Supreme Court Wants To Set Up A Committee For Speedy Trial Of Cheque Bounce Cases

The three-bench Constitutional bench of the Supreme Court led by Chief Justice of India(CJI) Sharad Bobde heard Supreme Court Suo Moto case on the pending cheque bounce cases in the country.

During the hearing, the bench termed cheque bounce as a criminal offense and advised the speedy trials of the cases pertaining to the issue. The bench opined to set up special committees to deal with these cases.

The court observed that 30 to 40 percent of Check bounce cases are pending in the other courts and said the Union Government should enable additional quotes to tackle the cases pertaining to check bounce.

Advising for the new committee to deal with these cases, the Supreme Court said the committee will be led by a retired judge and called for suggestions from the Union government.

In regard to the administration of justice of several states, the High Courts shall submit a response within four weeks on this through the registrar general and DGPs, the SC said.

The Sc had also said, only seven DGPs of various states have filed their responses over the summons and other issues related to the issue while all the DGPs were directed to file the reports. The directives were issued in October 2020.
