Mumbai Major Power Outage: CM Uddhav Thackeray Orders Probe

At present, all of Mumbai is experiencing an electricity outage, which is said to be due to the incoming electricity supply failure of the TATA. With the exception of the stock exchange and the Mumbai airport, nothing in the city now has electricity. Traffic signals also have no power supply in certain areas, and because of this blackout, the Western and Central railways have also been affected. This is the first time in history that India's financial capital has faced such an electricity supply failure. The disruption was initially triggered at 10:05 a.m., and the authorities concerned have been informing the people of Mumbai ever since that time that the power will be back in the next 45 minutes. However, Mumbai is still in a blackout, and the power is still expected to be back very soon.

On Monday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray took serious note of the Metropolitan Region of Mumbai (MMR) power outage and ordered an immediate investigation into it. State Energy Minister Nitin Raut also said the reasons behind the technical snag that triggered power failure in parts of the MMR would be probed once the electricity supply is restored. Thackeray spoke to Raut about the issue and asked him to make immediate attempts to restore the MMR supply. Thackeray took serious note of the power outage and ordered an urgent investigation into it, an official statement said.

Thackeray also instructed Commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to make alternate arrangements to ensure that hospital power supplies are intact, the statement said. He also instructed the state chief secretary to ensure that the control rooms and fire brigade are alert to see that due to power failure there are no other mishaps, it said. The chief minister also ordered officials to coordinate with the railway administration to assist passengers after the power failure hit the suburban local train services, the statement said.

In a video message and tweets, Energy Minister Raut said the power failure issue is being handled at the "war level," adding that it will be restored in about an hour. “Once the power is restored”, he tweeted, “a probe will be carried out for reasons that led to the technical snag.” In the morning, train services came to a halt in Mumbai as a grid failure resulted in major citywide power outages. The exact reason for the failure was not immediately known, but the fault was blamed on Tata Power by the Western Railway and Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transportation (BEST), the state-run discom supplying power to the island city.

Maharashtra Energy Minister Nitin Raut took to his Twitter account and said that the electric supply would be back in an hour, at 11:35 AM. He even stated that the blackout was because the transmission line of Kalwa-padgha was tripped, as a result of which the power of Thane-Palghar, New Mumbai was off. All hospitals were asked by the city's civic body to ensure that there was adequate diesel to ensure that the ICUs had adequate power supply. On the other side, within 45 minutes of the power outage, the western railways and central railways reopened. Many people, including celebrities, took to Twitter as soon as the power outage started. Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan Tweeted “Entire city in power outage .. somehow managing this message .. keep calm all shall be well”.
