Former CJI Ranjan Gogoi Defends Rajya Sabha Nomination

Former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi was nominated for Rajya Sabha by the President of India, Ram Nath Kovind which invited a debate and controversy. No Chief Justice has been nominated to the Upper House and Gogoi has become the first person to get an offer from the President.

Justice Gogoi had retired in November 2019 and served as the 46th Chief Justice of India from 3 October, 2018, to 17 November, 2019. He was also part of the five-judge bench that had delivered the verdict in the long-pending Ayodhya dispute case.

However, the oppositions claim that the Gogoi saved Modi let NDA government on issues like Rafael jet scam and this is a gift by the BJP to Gogoi. Senior advocate Kapil Sibal drew comparisons between Gogoi and HR Khanna on the former's nomination to Rajya Sabha.

AIMIM chief Owaisi termed this as a "quid pro quo" deal while veteran politician Yashwant Sinha said Gogoi should reject this offer if not this would cause a huge damage to Indian judiciary.

Ranjan Gogoi is yet to respond on this nomination by the President and from the sources we hear that there are high chances of him accepting the proposal.
