Abortion Limit Increased From 20 To 24 Weeks

The Union Cabinet has approved extending the upper limit for permitting abortions from the present 20 weeks to 24 weeks on Wednesday. That is, the Cabinet approved the Medical Termination of Pregnancy (Amendment) Bill, to amend the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971.

Soon, the Bill will be introduced in the Parliament session. On this, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that the same by confirming the extending of weeks. He also said that this will ensure safe termination of pregnancies and also give women reproductive rights over their bodies.

The extension is also highly beneficial for rape victims, minors and girls with disabilities who may not realise they are pregnant until later. "In a progressive reform and giving reproductive rights to women, this move is crucial because in the first 5 months there are cases where the girl concerned doesn't realise and has to go to court. This was discussed with various stakeholders. This will reduce maternal mortality," Prakash Javadekar said.

It is certainly a progressive step towards the safety and well-being of the women and many women will be benefitted by this. However, the extension of the upper limit for abortions will not apply in cases of substantial foetal abnormalities diagnosed by Medical Board.
